POOL TABLE MOVES FOR DIY’ERS

Moving a pool table is very similar to moving a piano, they both have complex pieces and can cost a ton of money if pieces become broken. On average, a pool table can weigh between 500-1,000 lbs. so a team is important to have for moving it in the house or to a new home. Breaking down the pool table can take on average an hour from start to finish. It’s going to take a team of three to four friends to help with the entire process.

If you are a DIY’er like me you can follow these steps to get the job done:

  1. Removing the Bumpers Start by removing the bumpers from all sides of the pool table. Depending on the type of wood you have, the bumpers should be fairly easy to remove. Once all the bumpers have been removed, it’ll expose the slate that will be discussed later in this guide.

  1. Removing the Felt
It’s time to remove the felt. The felt is either stapled or glued to the table; possibly even both. Whether it’s stapled or glued, you should be gentle during the removal process making sure not to rip the felt near pocket areas. Start by going around the table clockwise or counterclockwise instead of starting in different areas of the pool table.

Consider: If you are thinking of replacing the felt when you put the pool table back together make sure you order beforehand so it can arrive timely for application.

  1. Picking up the Slate
Now that the felt is off, you are going to need a helping hand with the slate. A drill is the best tool for removing slate tables. If your pool table has plaster or beeswax covering the screws, any screwdriver should do the trick. Once again, take your time removing screws. Pool tables typically come with two or three pieces of slate that can be between ¾ to 1” thick so it’s important you don’t try to lift it on your own. Slate is extremely heavy but fragile. Make sure you crate or transport it flat with additional padding for cushion.

Consider: When you remove the slate once flat on the floor it will be difficult to lift off the floor. Use wedges to keep it elevated to make it easier for lifting.

  1. Disassemble the Legs
We’re almost done! This is where your group of friends will come in handy. Now carefully flip the pool table over and take the legs off the frame. Now that the pool table is upside down, removing the pockets should be a breeze.

  1. Loading the Pool Table Finally! All the pieces to the pool table have been broken down. Hopefully you’ve already wrapped and protected each section for the trip. On your way to the truck, make sure the frame is already flipped upside down so there won’t be a need to flip it once it’s time to load it. Lastly, securely place all the other items on top of the frame. Your pool table is ready to go!

If you are still thinking this may be too much of a bother, you should definitely hire a professional pool table mover. Pool tables are heavy and lifting without the proper help can easily turn in to someone getting hurt. Never attempt to take on more than you can handle when attempting to move anything.

WHY DID YOU START

My reason for starting a business where I did in my life was because God said it was time, because he understood my vision because he gave it to me. I was in a not so healthy relationship and God pulled me out and unfortunately I had to rebuild myself back up. I began doing moving as a means to get by until I found something stable and God placed me in the right place at the right time. While I was moving a client in Boulder the home screenshot_20170127-071351_1 owner was taking note of my work ethic and how well I handled situations, he happen to be the vice president of a fortune 500 company. When the job was complete he slipped me his card and said come work for me so I did. It  turned out to be a great position @ $18.43 per hour 45 hours a week. I bought me a car, started apartment hunting and began the process to repair my credit through bankruptcy so I can be prepared for marriage…

While I was working here it had come up in family conversation numerous times to start up a moving company, needless to say I was pleased to see my close cousins had the same vision I had though we would finish our  beer and just go about the next days as normal but the conversation was good none the less. fb_img_1485524533973 During this time also I met my beautiful wife we seemed to be in the same place in life headed in the same direction and right on time for Gods vision.

After a year with the company they began going through a few changes in structure and people mainly higher level management started to be laid off, then the employees, and I was one of the unlucky chosen few to go (I guess it’s not always who you know). This comes 6 months after bringing a new kid into the world purchasing 2 brand new cars and settling into a new townhome with dog and new family. fb_img_1485524542478 The very core of our foundation was shook and I had to do something. My wife was on maternity leave with no pay attached, when it was time for her to return to work they told her she had to work to pay off her medical insurance that she received during leave so they were going to hold her first 3 to 4 checks. I couldn’t help but say “sorry baby but it’s time to leave this company and for us to focus on Gods vision”.

Forward Motion Movers was founded as an initiative to do just that “Move Forward”. I was raised on the principal of self-sufficiency but that idea was lost when I was pushed into foster care at the age of 12. There was no entrepreneurial push for me. It was always about go to college and get a job while that was very helpful it never seemed fulfilling enough for me but I did it anyway. I just knew there was a greater calling on my life. This was the opportunity for my wife and I to combine our powers to help our community build and most importantly guide our youth to feel more fulfilled through self-efficiency and to be an example to those watching, to create programs and trainings that aide in developing essential business skills, and to create jobs and opportunities for those like me to build a foundation for themselves and create a legacy.

Owning a business should never be about the image. There has to be a deeper purpose and just like everything with a purpose there comes trials and there are definitely challenges to face. You are going to have plenty of learning opportunities and you will get it wrong it’s inevitable. The most important thing to do when facing these trials and when you fall looking up into the eyes of defeat is to get up brush your pants off, clean the dust off your sleeves, lace up those shoes, place one foot in front of the other and continue to “Move Forward”. It is Gods vision!

A Big Wheel for Christmas

The 6 Roly Polys

potato-bugs

Christmas of 1994, there was a family hard pressed to make Christmas happen as many were. Jack, a country man trying to make it big in the city, continuously pushed his family to keep moving and never stop working regardless of the circumstance. The “6 roly polys” is what he properly called them. A family that continues to show the persistence to keep going in the presence of adversity.

Thanks to organizations like SERTOMA (local chapter: http://www.gphsertoma.com/), Jack was able to pull things together and make Christmas happen for his family through sponsored toy drives across the city like at your local Boys & Girls Clubs or Toys for Tots. That memorable year, his youngest daughter wished for a brand new big wheel to help keep up with the bigger kids in the neighborhood. When Christmas came there was a brand new big wheel under the tree for her, but it was what dad did next that made him the hero of the day.

When she went to reveal her biggest wish come true, all of the kids were on brand new bikes and keeping up wasn’t going to be as easy as she expected. After Jack over heard a couple of the kids teasing his baby girl for being slow, he sprang into action challenging the young boys to a race around the block; them on their bikes against her slow big wheel. teenage-boys-riding-bikes-19118848

After noticing the look of sure defeat on his daughters face he kneeled in front of her and said “Winners never quit and quitters never win, and you’re a winner”! As they approached the starting line the two boys smirked as Jack positioned himself behind the big wheel to even the playing field telling her “you pedal, I’ll push”. “On your marks! Get set! Go!” Someone yelled and it was on. The other neighborhood kids stood in anticipation as the race rounded the final corner and to the surprise of everyone the big wheel was in the lead and with one final push the big wheel crossed the finish line first. Everyone celebrated and joined in to mock the young boys for losing to a girl on a big wheel.

That day, Jack was crowned hero but this tale of persistence and triumph began well before Christmas day. It began with your donations as a community. Your decision to donate to organizations like the Boys and Girls Club or the Blair Caldwell African American Research Library , helps dads like Jack make a way for Christmas each and every year for their families. Your new or used toys give a kid just a little ounce of hope when it seems like all odds are stacked against them. A big wheel played a huge roll in the days’ events and left an unforgettable impression on a young lady that she will carry with her for the rest of her life. Although, a simple teddy bear, gift card, or even a pair of socks can be just as impactful to a kid with little to nothing.

Moving… Is There Another Way?

friends-help

How many times have you went through the trouble of moving from place to place packing, loading and carrying all of your heavy belongings, taking up you and your friends entire Saturday to get it done just to avoid high cost moving expenses. What if I told you, you don’t have to break your back or bank to get moved and do it in half the time? All it takes is knowing your options for every moving, storage and relocation situation.

What are your options?

  • Do it yourself moving
  • Full service moving
  • Hybrid moving

Traditionally moving day is filled with grueling task: packing and lugging all of your belongings to your new house on your own or borrowing a few willing to help but frustrated friends. We call this the DIY move. DIY moves are the default solution for people that love to penny pinch and looking to save money on expensive truck fees, inflated hourly rates and movers who squeeze out every hour to feel like they have been well compensated for the day. All these things come with our dreaded second full service option.

Our third option is what we call the Hybrid move. Its DIY meets full service moving right in the middle. Moving has evolved and many more innovative ways of moving down the block or across the country have surfaced and made moving and storage less stressful and more cost effective. We call it the 50/50 model at Forward Motion. Instead of hiring a full service moving company that passes on the overhead cost of maintaining trucks, hire quality moving help to load and or unload your rented truck, mobile storage unit or trailer for long distance transport, and let your friends keep their Saturday to themselves, we promise they will love you for it.
